- The Mosquito-Straw is an insect very present in regions of forests and shrubs. However, with the constant environmental modification caused by man, it is also possible to find the straw mosquito in urbanized areas. They inhabit mainly humid, dark and plant-rich places.
- They are also known in Brazil as birigui mosquito, armadillo, white wing and cangalha.
- They are small mosquitoes and when they land they remain with their wings raised.
- There are about 400 species of straw mosquito.
- Because mosquito food is blood, they usually sting humans and animals for food.
- They inhabit mainly forest regions of the American continent.
- The straw mosquito of the genus Lutzomyia can transmit to man, through sting, a protozoan of the genus Leishmania. The disease is known as Leishmaniasis. The bite of a straw mosquito usually hurts a lot. The disease can also affect dogs.
- Females lay their eggs in damp places on the ground (under leaves and stones).
